Below are 14 factors that helped University of California Riverside graduate a large number of Latino students. This was taken from April 18th edition of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education publication. I believe that we can learn from these strategies. I am proud to say that George Fox is employing some of these same strategies to increase our retention and graduation rates with Latino students.
- Commitment starts at the top filters through through campus.
- Develop learning communities
- Recruit targeted students
- Build word of mouth in the community
- Establish a welcoming atmosphere on campus
- Having a critical mass matters
- Create an early intervention system
- Maintain affordability
- Devise programs that target Hispanics
- Hold cultural events
- Develop diversity programs
- Encourage volunteering
- Why students fail to graduate
- Create strategic plans for the future to increase success
My hopes is that institutions can use these strategies to decrease the gaps that exist between not only Latino students, but all students of color with the white peers.
